Double Dose of CicLAvia Radio

Keen listeners to local airwaves were treated to not one but two aural CicLAvia treats this week.
Listen here: KCRW and KPFK. More discussion below.
This evening KCRW’s Warren Olney hosted a Which Way L.A.? segment on CicLAvia events being planned in Los Angeles and Santa Monica (starts around minute 10.) Guests included CicLAvia’s Joe Linton. The show also reviews Mayor Villaraigosa’s recent biking incident, Olney’s own dooring, and the city of Los Angeles’ latest draft Bicycle Plan.
It sounds like Brian Taylor, the Director UCLA’s Institute of Transportation Studies, didn’t seem all that knowledgable about existing studies on bike safety. If readers are interested in the research on bicycling, collisions and health, maybe start with this excellent UK summary of existing research: “Cycling and Health: What’s the Evidence?“ Comparing bicycling and driving injury rates show that they’re roughly equivalent, while health benefits outweigh the risk of injury by a factor of around 20 to one.
CicLAvia’s Jenn Su was interviewed yesterday as part of KPFK’s occasional on-air Bike Talk show. CicLAvia is covered around minute 22 through 30. Bike Talk is also produced on a weekly basis as an internet radio show – click here for archives of recent shows.
