CicLAvia will be TEN TEN TEN!

Ten Ten Ten.

That’s Sunday October 10th 2010!

at 10am! until 3pm.

CicLAva, Los Angeles’ new public space will take place on October 10th 2010. By removing car traffic from select streets, CicLAvia will open streets to bicycling and walking for people of all ages and abilities. It’s basically a big new park where Angelenos can play, explore, exercise and more!

CicLAvia is a partnership. It’s hosted by the City of Los Angeles, under the leadership of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who recently learned first-hand some of the difficulties that bicyclists face on L.A. streets. The event has the full support of the city’s Police Department, the city’s Department of Transportation, as well as the Fire Department and the Department of Public Works playing smaller but critical roles.

It’s also hosted by CicLAvia – a recently-formed non-profit organization which has raised over $70,000.00 to bring ciclovía to Los Angeles (though we still need your donationplease give today – receive a button or T-shirt!) CicLAvia is working with a lot of existing community groups, including the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition, Los Angeles Conservation Corps, Green L.A. Coalition, C.I.C.L.E., the Bicycle Kitchen, and many others!

The route is 98% the same as we announced earlier7.5-miles from Boyle Heights to Downtown to MacArthur Park to East Hollywood. We’re responding to some input and slightly tweaking our route through downtown. Look for a final route announcement here in a few days.

CicLAvia was originally announced to take place on September 12th. Working with all of our partners, it became clear that we needed a little more time to make a really great event. City and community folks put our heads together and chose the easy-to-remember 10/10/2010 date. At the same time as we were finalizing our decision, the city of Santa Monica also initiated plans for a 10/10/10 ciclovía event, so this October is likely to see not one by two excellent open street festivals. We’re hoping that we can grow each of these in the future and combine with ciclovías in Pasadena and elsewhere into a recurring weekly gigantic car-free event.

Mark your calendar for 10/10/10, and if you can, please donate to make the event a big success.

Maybe a good day to ride between the Ciclovia’s too? Follow the Mayor’s route on Venice – probably an hour’s ride between both events. Santa Monica’s is earlier – probably only in the morning 8AM to 1PM.

  • […] Los Angeles will be the latest California city to have a car-free Ciclovia-style event. On October 10th, streets in one L.A. neighborhood will close to cars so that cyclists and pedestrians can take over the space. Like Sunday Streets in San Francisco, organizers hope to make this event a regular summer occurrence in the city. (CicLAvia) […]
