Help Kickstart CicLAvia into a Successful 2011!

Make L.A.'s streets safe for her in 2011

If you enjoyed CicLAvia in 2010, you’re going to love 2011!

With events planned in April, July, and October, CicLAvia is going to generate more smiles, more health, more foot traffic for the local economy, and more civic pride. We’re looking to expand and grow and touch even more Angelenos as, together, we change the face of Los Angeles.

We need your help to make CicLAvia a success in 2011.

Please consider donating to our new 2011 CicLAvia Kickstarter Campaign. You can contribute as little as one dollar. Gifts of $11 or more receive a CicLAvia 2011 spoke card. Higher dollar gifts receive even groovier premiums.

Details at our Kickstarter campaign page. Please make a contribution today – and pass the word along to your friends, too!

We’re counting on you – and looking forward to riding with you in 2011.

Exciting Community Dialogue on South L.A. CicLAvia Expansion

Talking about a CicLAvia in South L.A.

Last Thursday, December 9th 2010, about two dozen folks gathered for CicLAvia’s first meeting to explore expanding into South Los Angeles. The meeting was hosted by the Figueroa Corridor Community Land Trust (FCCLT) and Strategic Actions for a Just Economy (SAJE.) In attendance were interested individuals and folks affiliated with various organizations, including: the Bicycle Advisory Committee (BAC) of the city of Los Angeles, Black Kids on Bikes Freedom Ride L.A.City Lites, Community Health Councils, the Downtown Los Angeles Neighborhood Council, Unity Sports, and others. Maybe Modifying the CicLAvia Route – Part 2: West End

The west end of the 10-10-10 CicLAvia route - mostly on New Hampshire Avenue

Yesterday we explored some possible modifications to the Boyle Heights end of the 10-10-10 CicLAvia route, today let’s take a look at the west end of the route through Koreatown and East Hollywood to the Bicycle District – and explore what we might change for the upcoming April 10th 2011 event.

We definitely want to hear from you, but the yesterday’s article’s disclaimers apply here as well:

This isn’t a vote or a poll… it’s input. Ultimately the CicLAvia non-profit board will be working with various route stakeholders, neighborhood councils, community groups, city of Los Angeles staff, Metro, and others – and using our best judgement to negotiate and finalize the route that can work best. We expect that almost any route chosen (including keeping the exact same 10-10-10 route again) will be great – and will almost certainly have a drawback or two. Please help make us more aware of concerns on the route, but please be aware that, ultimately, we may or may not be able to address all concerns raised. (more…)

Maybe Modifying the CicLAvia Route – Part 1: East End

The eastern end of the 10-10-10 route - mostly on 4th Street

CicLAvia is getting going on the permitting process for our April 10th 2011 event. As we announced the route is more-or-less the same as 10-10-10 when we did 7.5 miles from Boyle Heights to East Hollywood. We love the 10-10-10 route, but we are looking into making a few tweaks that we think could improve it.

We want to hear your input on possible changes to the route – but first a few disclaimers: (more…)

MARK YOUR CALENDARS! The next CicLAvia will be Sunday April 10th 2011! The 4-10-2011 route will be pretty much the same as the 10-10-10 route – 7.5 miles from East Hollywood to Koreatown to MacArthur Park to Downtown to Little Tokyo to Boyle Heights.

We’re also looking to set the date for two more CicLAvias later in 2011. (more…)

Help Us Set the April 2011 CicLAvia Date

Smiling CicLAvia-istas on 10-10-10 - photo by Gary Leonard

There are a lot of factors that go into setting the date for CicLAvia. In a place as big as Los Angeles, it’s nearly impossible to find a date with no conflicts. The CicLAvia board is looking to host the next CicLAvia event in more-or-less the same 7-mile route as we did on 10-10-10 (more on some possible tweaks – soon!) extending from East Hollywood to Boyle Heights.

We’re planning to do CicLAvia on a Sunday in April 2011 and we’d like your input on the date. We’re also polling area organizations, businesses, city agencies, Metro, etc. to get their concerns and ideas.

Are you aware of any big events that are happening in April 2011 that we should avoid competing with? Are you aware of any big events in April 2011 that we should try to dovetail with? Let us know in the comments below!

City Council Today, Streets in 2011

2010 CicLAvia riders on the 4th Street Bridge - Photo by Jenn Su

The CicLAvia board met last night, and we’re all smiles. It’s such a treat to hear so many great stories, and so much excitement about CicLAvia’s future! We’ve got a couple of fun announcements:

It’s all somewhat up in the air at this time – subject to change – but we decided to plan on 4-6 CicLAvia events in 2011! The first 2011 CicLAvia will tentatively be in April, along the central Los Angeles route, same as (or similar to – possibly expanded) the 10-10-10 route. From there we hope to move around to different parts of the city (possibly collaborating with other adjacent cities) and return to the central 10-10-10 route again once or twice later in the year. Please keep giving your ideas and recommendations for future CicLAvias.
