this sounds like an outstanding idea. please inform me as the time gets a little closer! i would like to bring my family out and enjoy a bike ride in downtown. will there be parking for those driving in, or will there be a discount on the metro?

There’s already plenty of parking: on street (mostly unmetered on Sundays) or at paid parking lots (mostly downtown, mostly a flat rate like $4-5 on Sundays.) We’re not planning to contract for any parking specific to the event. We haven’t planned for any Metro discounts either – the base fare is $1.50 for one-way or $6 for a day pass. See you downtown on Sunday 10-10-10!

Very excited about this event and really looking forward to it…is the route very hillly? All I’ve got is a heavy beach cruiser, which isn’t too fun on hills.

The event is definitely doable on beach cruiser. In selecting the route, we had it in mind to avoid hills, and I think we did a good job – though there are a couple of minor hills, still.
None of these are major, but there are small slopes on 4th Street near Boyle, on 7th at Figueroa, and on both sides of the 4th Street Bridge over the L.A. River.

There will be a group riding to CICLAVIA from the San Gabriel Valley. We will be meeting up at the WALGREENS on MAIN St. & FREMONT Ave, Alhambra @ 8:30 am. We hope to roll out by 9:00 am. The streets open up at 10am! The city will be barricading and securing the route starting about 9:30am, and it will all be open by 10am.
(It ends at 3pm, and the streets will allow cars back on starting shortly after 3pm and fully restored to status quo by ~3:45)

Hey, I just realized that Ciclavia — sorry, internal punctuation is for rappers and internet startups — ends just three blocks south of my new Boyle Heights lending library/used bookshop, Libros Schmibros! I don’t usually keep Sunday hours, but this is just too good to miss. By all means, everybody who makes it to Hollenbeck Park please coast on up to Libros Schmibros at 2000 E. 1st St., just across Cummings St. from the freeway. We have half a dozen books by new-minted Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa — all in English so far, but check back — and only about 7,000 more besides…

Yes – the entire 7-mile route is open for biking and walking from 10am to 3pm. And if you don’t get back to your truck by 3pm, then, After 3pm you can still bike on the streets (or sidewalks, or take Metro.)

That sounds good–I ride with my kids (they’re a bit older now), but I see lots of other parents riding their kids in trailers, bike seats, cargo bikes, those trail-a-bike things, etc.
If you come out to the start of our family/kids ride, I know you will see many other parents there with kids in all sorts or bikes and bike attachments.

this is a lame idea… to make LA a bike friendly place, every street will need to be completely redesigned and jerk bicyclist will have to learn the rules of the road. I hate bicyclist!!!!

The LA times did a pretty good article about Ciclavia but the comments are all from car people and are very negative. It would be a great thing if we posted some positives of Ciclavia on the Times site. 🙂
