Mama's Hot Tamales - on the CicLAvia route - across from MacArthur Park

What’s better than biking with friends? Eating with friends! The good news is that you can do both this Sunday at CicLAvia. The 7.5 mile route will wind through some of LA’s foodie meccas.

Start off in Little Tokyo with some of the city’s best ramen or sushi. Next, make your way to MacArthur Park, where you’ll find mole tamales at local favorite Mama’s Hot Tamales and world famous pastrami at Langer’s. Grab a pupusa or two, too, sir. Wind your way through K-town and sample the famous BBQ or sip bubble tea through an over sized straw. And save room for Chai, Lavendar or Thai Iced Tea gelato at Scoops in the Bicycle District.

Have room for more? Explore this map of Jonathan Gold’s picks along the CicLAvia route. Don’t forget the sweet dessert suggestions at our earlier post.

And, yes, Virginia… there will be food trucks! Here’s a list of food trucks lined up so far, and we expect additional trucks to show, too:

  • Hollenbeck Park: Crepe N Around, Slice Truck, Maui Wowi
  • City Hall: Krazy BBQ, Surfer Taco, No Jodas Cuban
  • MacArthur Park: Smokin Willies, TAM TRUCK, Del’s Lemonade
  • Hel-Mel Bicycle District: Slammin Sliders, TNB, Chef Che Argentine Cuisine

A word to the wise: don’t pack a lunch! Bring some money and some appetite and sample some great eats that the route has to offer. Some businesses along the route are worried that CicLAvia might hurt their business, but, as similar events around the world have shown, lots of foot and bike traffic can provide them with plenty of customers! Bon appetit!

Langers open on a Sunday? That’d be great…but somehow I doubt it. Mama’s will be great, though!

Not that I need to get back on a bike after downing their best pastrami ever (I have and it’s no fun), but still.. I wish I’d had the forethought to contact Langers and tell them what they’ll be missing. I bet Mr. Langer would’ve mustered up enough staff to open.

I actually spoke with the manager in charge at Langers, when we went door to door on the route to tell folks about CicLAvia… they didn’t seem to be interested in being open on a Sunday… and they didn’t like the idea of us using their parking lot on Sunday, either (it serves as a pay lot on Sundays)… they got a good routine going, and they stick with it.
