This Friday September September 17th 2010 is Park(ing) Day! Park(ing) Day has a lot in common with CicLAvia – both events work on repurposing and activating street spaces.
On one lucky Friday in September, all over the known universe, playful urban revisionaries take over parking spaces, put quarters in the meter, and create temporary parks. Last year CicLAvia hosted a small park… this year we’ve been so busy preparing for 10/10/10 we decided to just show up at someone else’s park.
The Downtown Los Angeles Neighborhood Council (DLANC) is hosting a parking space park on Spring Street between 4th and 5th Streets… which wouldn’t-you-know-it just happens to be on the October 10th 2010 CicLAvia route!
DLANC’s Valerie Watson gave us the 411 on the 9/17 20×8: The DLANC is looking to showcase future and planned Downtown L.A. parks including the adjacent Spring Street Park . They’re also looking to provide neighbors with a window into for what’s needed all across Downtown L.A.: safe, accessible, public open space that offers green grass and social opportunities, along with respite from the urban condition. They’ll also be showing off the CicLAvia route, which creates a temporary park-like public space (sans grass, though.)
One of the highlights at the DLANC space will be Bolt Barbers giving complimentary haircuts throughout the day. Watson concludes: “park(ing) day spots all over LA will be giving the same general message: more parks, less parking!”
