Last Sunday’s CicLAvia Community Ride wasn’t quite a CicLAvia, but was still a lot of fun. Just over 200 cyclists (and three rollerbladers!) rode an 8.5-mile loop from Boyle Heights to South L.A. to the Fashion District to Chinatown and back to Boyle Heights. The ride focused on three community landmarks that we plan to connect CicLAvia with on October 9th 2011: South L.A.’s African American Firefighter Museum, Chinatown’s the Plaza (at El Pueblo), and Boyle Height’s Mariachi Plaza.
When we announced that the July 10th CicLAvia wouldn’t be happening, we knew a lot of folks already had that day penciled in… or even written in pen… or, more likely these days, electronically recorded… on their calendars. To cushion the waves of CicLAvia withdrawal, we’re hosting a group ride instead. It’s a chance to get together and bike in the city.
The CicLAvia Community Ride will take place on Sunday July 10th 2011. Folks gather starting 12:30pm, departing 1pm from Hollenebeck Park. Suggested donation $5. No streets closed; riders obey traffic laws. More details after the jump.
This Sunday – June 26th 2011 – show up to support CicLAvia’s South L.A. expansion! The CicLAvia South L.A. Host Committee has planned a series of monthly rides/workshops in advance of the October 9th CicLAvia event. The goals of the pre-CicLAvia events include getting the word out on CicLAvia, building more bike skills/knowledge, and having a great time riding together through South Los Angeles. Rides and workshops are in collaboration with the County Cycling Colaborative, including C.I.C.L.E., LACBC and many other awesome bike organizations, and funded by Los Angeles County Department of Public Health’s RENEW initiative.
This Sunday’s free event is at Mercado La Paloma, 3655 S. Grand Ave., Los Angeles 90007. Here’s the schedule:
These aren’t one-hundred-percent finalized yet, but CicLAvia wants to share the draft expansion routes for South Los Angeles and Boyle Heights. The October/April CicLAvia route is shown in red. Expansion for Boyle Heights is blue; for South L.A. green.
CicLAvia has worked with community groups in these areas to form local host committees. Potential routes has been brainstormed, bicycled and refined. Nonetheless, the CicLAvia expansion host committees are still meeting with various folks and still finalizing these routes. It takes about four months for the permitting process, so the pretty-much-final versions will be submitted to the city in mid-June. Depending on funding, logistics, capabilities, these routes may be added in full or in part this October. If you want to see CicLAvia expand, please donate and/or sponsor!
